What in heaven's name is going on with Spike Lee's latest joint, Chi-raq (2015)? It's pure, playful madness that teeters between genius and silly, and everywhere else a generous measure of audacity. This is Lee being preachy about guns and black-on-black violence, and he does so via Aristophanes' Lysistrata transposed to modern Chicago, complete with dialogue in rhyme. In the wake of a child's killing in the middle of a battle between two rival gangs, the girlfriends of the men from each group decide to join hands together and withhold sexual privileges until the violence stops. In other words, no peace, no pussy. It's all brash and disjointed, but I enjoyed it. ★★★☆☆
