How to Celebrate Seven Months

For Mark Xander

Because the number is lucky, you feel

Luckier on this day of days, the bounce

On your feet flighty as

The expectations for old kiss and old

Warmth, the strength of memory pliable now

And become comfortable. Like an old shoe.

Or the stainless steel bands both of you call

Engagement rings -- something you bought,

Like children caught with a secret, from an old

Hag of a saleslady at the Tops and Bottoms

Department Store. "Tops!" "Bottoms!" You

Both laughed, some secret joke only your

Kind understands, a contraband language that

Will translate itself soon into molten bed linen,

Snaking through comfortable skins kissing

Each kiss, each old touch.

You will not have candles, or dinners, or

Movies -- because seven months have no

Need for bad rituals: only a want for

That slight touch -- your hand

Keeping watch as we cross the street for

Home, ours -- telling me that all is well, and old.

Comfortable, like the snug of seven

Months.
