A Note for an Aging Romeo
Every time you tell your court of nodding friends
That this boy, or that boy, has been staring at you
The whole night,
In a restaurant, or a bar, or a crawl in a parking lot,
Their beautiful eyes dark with delicious design --
I ask myself:
What do they really stare at?
Your pudgy face laced with the dreadful
Incursions of wrinkles and defeat?
How you must think yourself beautiful,
A catch for another night's tumble
In your bed.
How you must believe
In your fantasy that you are the capital of lust,
Your body a wonderland.Such courage.
Such denial of the unspoken truth that these dark boys
Look only at you
For the fat wallet that you are.
