entry arrow5:22 PM | Raise Your Arches

This short film, “Raise Your Arches,” which Edgar Wright directed for McDonald’s is brilliant. The simplicity of the story, sans burger or store. The meme-able eyebrow-raising. The iconic score from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

entry arrow1:28 AM | Dove and Race

The clips we got in our social media feeds were actually cropped, incomplete -- edited to be race-baity. The white woman actually eventually turned into an Asian woman, and so on and so forth, suggesting a theme of fluidity more than anything else. Context changes perception. It's still a campaign that should have been rethought before execution, but the complete story should give us pause. The quick outrage that followed may have harmed more than helped our fight for POC concerns. In this age of click-baits and fake news, it is always wise to verify and research everything, even things that preach to our kind of choir.

Read Lola Ogunyemi's op-ed piece for The Guardian: "I am the woman in the 'racist Dove ad'. I am not a victim."

entry arrow11:21 PM | The Art of the Teenage Wasteland

Maybe it’s because I’m reading Jon Savage’s groundbreaking exploration of the formation of the culture of adolescence in Teenage. Or maybe because I just finished watching Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (2012). But sometimes, the art of Terry Richardson, Larry Clark, Harmony Korine, Brett Easton Ellis, and often Steven Meisel (especially in 1995) clumped together — distinctive for their almost salacious eye on teenage white-trashy abandon, which celebrates and condemns it at the same time — frankly scares me. Or at least unsettles me.

But maybe to unsettle is the point.

Or maybe I’m just getting old, hahaha.

entry arrow10:05 AM | Have a Hoppy New Year!

This is easily my favorite television ad from last year. The color! The sheer ingenuity! The hopping bunnies in downtown New York! Never ceases to put a smile on my face, this one...

Now, if only local ad agencies are as creative and persevering....

entry arrow1:10 PM | Goodbye, Karlo

I love this comic strip from Blogenyo, a.k.a. Eugene Villar.

It's a spiffy update of the now-classic "Goodbye, Carlo" Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdog commercial, now remade for the Internet age.

P.S. Just in case you want to know, Chantal Umali, that hotdog girl, is now a photographer and a professor at De La Salle University.

entry arrow2:34 PM | Creepy Ads

I have a certain fondness for the weird and the strange. Creepy advertising, for example. Would you buy a loaf of bread because of this manic-eyed little girl?

Ahh, the weird old days of print advertising. You can see more over at Weirdomatic.
